Email Sequences
Single-email outreach is a coin flip. Hiring managers are busy — they read, mean to reply, forget. Sequences give your outreach two, three, or four follow-up steps that send themselves on schedule and pause the moment someone replies. Available on the Outreach plan.
What is a Sequence?
A sequence is an ordered series of email steps with timed delays. When you enroll a hiring manager into a sequence, Stori queues each step and sends it at the right time. If they reply, bounce, or unsubscribe, the sequence pauses automatically — they never get a follow-up after they've already responded.
Sequences live under Recruiter → Email → Sequences. You'll see your existing sequences with their status (Draft, Active, Paused, Archived) and live performance metrics.
Creating a Sequence
Click New Sequence. You can start blank or from a template.
- Name the sequence so future-you can find it (e.g. "VP Eng outreach — May 2026").
- Add steps. Each step has a subject line, body, and a delay measured from the previous step. The first step's delay is how long after enrollment Stori sends step 1.
- Use variables for personalization —
{{contactName}},{{companyName}},{{candidateName}},{{profileUrl}}. Stori fills these in per recipient at send time. - Embed your Stori profile as a video card in any step. The GIF preview pulls them in; clicking opens your full Stori profile.
A pattern that works: short intro on day 0, "bumping this" follow-up on day 3, a value-add follow-up with a specific question on day 7, breakup email on day 12. Most replies come on step 2 or 3 — single-step sequences leave the majority of conversions on the table.
Enrolling Hiring Managers
Enroll contacts from your Shortlist. Select one or several rows, then choose Enroll in Sequence from the bulk action menu.
Enrollment requires that the contact has an unlocked email address (1 outreach credit per unlock if not already unlocked). Unlocked contacts are saved permanently — you never pay twice.
Stori won't enroll a contact who's already in another active sequence, who has previously bounced, or who has unsubscribed. The bulk action will tell you how many were skipped and why.
Auto-Pause Rules
A sequence stops sending to a specific contact in any of these cases:
- Reply — they reply from their email client. Stori detects the reply via your Gmail/Outlook integration and pauses remaining steps for that contact.
- Bounce — hard bounces stop sending and mark the email as invalid in your shortlist.
- Unsubscribe — every Stori email includes an unsubscribe link. Clicking it pauses every sequence and adds the contact to your suppression list.
- Manual stop — you can pull a contact out of a sequence at any time from their detail page or the sequence's enrollment list.
Auto-pause is per contact — your sequence keeps running for everyone else.
Sequence Lifecycle
Sequences move through four states:
- Draft — being built. No emails are sending. You can enroll contacts here but they won't receive anything until the sequence is active.
- Active — running. Enrolled contacts receive their next step on schedule. New enrollments start at step 1.
- Paused — temporarily stopped. Already-queued steps don't send. Resume to pick up where it left off.
- Archived — read-only history. No sends, no enrollments. Use Archive for retired sequences.
Keeping Sequences Personal
The trap with sequences is that they can feel like spam. A few rules to keep yours personal:
- Use variables, not just names. "I saw you scaled the {{companyName}} team to 200 engineers" lands harder than "Hi {{contactName}}, hope you're well."
- Different angles per step. Step 1 introduces you. Step 2 references something specific about their company. Step 3 asks a focused question. Don't just say "bumping this" three times.
- Embed your Stori profile. The video shows you can communicate; the traits show your verified strengths. Most cold-outbound senders can't prove either.
- Keep it short. Hiring managers skim. Four lines beats four paragraphs.
Test a sequence on yourself first by enrolling your own email. You see exactly what arrives, when, and how it reads.
Tracking Performance
Each sequence shows live numbers on the list view: enrollments, sent count, open rate, reply rate. Click into a sequence to see step-by-step breakdown — open and reply rates per step, plus a list of every enrolled contact with their current step and status.
If step 3 has a high open rate but a low reply rate, your subject line is working but the body isn't. If step 1 has a low open rate, the subject line is the problem. Tune one variable at a time.
